Hiltom Head Island Beach Rules 2025

Hilton Head Beach Rules, Explained (2025 Edition)

Welcome to Hilton Head Beach! Whether you're a local or visiting, it's important to know and follow the beach rules to keep our shores safe, clean, and enjoyable for everyone. Here’s what you need to know

1. Alcohol

  • Allowed? No — The consumption of alcohol (including beer, wine, and hard spirits) is strictly prohibited on all public beaches in Hilton Head.

  • Why it matters: Helps maintain a family-friendly atmosphere and minimizes safety risks.

  • Enforcement: Beach patrols regularly monitor beaches for compliance.

2. Glass Containers

  • Allowed? No — Glass of any kind (bottles, jars, or containers) is not allowed on the beach.

  • Why it matters: Broken glass poses a serious hazard, especially to barefoot beachgoers.

  • Pro tip: Use plastic, metal, or aluminum alternatives to keep things safe and stress-free.

3. Holes & Trenches

  • Allowed? Light, shallow holes (no deeper than 12 inches) are typically allowed—but always fill them in before leaving.

  • Why it matters: Deep holes and sunken trenches can cause injuries or accidents for others walking or running on the beach.

  • Quick guideline: If you dig it, you must fill it!

4. Tents, Canopies & Shade Structures

  • Allowed? Yes, but with these conditions:

    • Shade structures must be under 10 feet on any side.

    • Must be secured with sand bags or non-invasive anchors only (no stakes deeper than 12 inches).

  • Why it matters: Prevents damage from wind and protects natural dunes and vegetation.

  • Tip: Opt for quick-release sandbags to avoid disturbing the beach surface when you pack up.

5. Overnight Camping & Items Left Unattended

  • Allowed? No — Overnight camping, sleeping, or leaving personal belongings unattended overnight is not allowed on Hilton Head’s public beaches.

  • Why it matters: Protects personal property, reduces litter, and supports safety and wildlife conservation.

  • Best practice: Pack up all belongings before dusk and depart with a clean site.

6. Protecting Our Turtles

Our beaches are vital nesting grounds for sea turtles. Please be especially mindful during nesting season:

  • Minimize beach lighting at night.

  • Keep a safe distance—do not approach or disturb nests.

  • Leave turtle tracks undisturbed.
